At the end of February I traveled out to the Italian Lakes, Lake Como and Lake Maggiore, to see some of our houses and to inspect some new ones, which will come online soon. The weather was strangely misty but we still had some beautiful panoramas opening out in front of us as we drove around the shores. We tested restaurants, prodded mattresses, peered into bathrooms and bedrooms and generally tried to get the measure of all the properties.

Some of my highlights: Eva’s Cottage – the building next door is still going on but should be completed before the summer. The shoreline is a delight!

Villa Labiena and Montebello – Montebello is the old custodian’s house to Villa Labiena but is now a sweet little place for a family of four and has a beautiful terrace overlooking the lake. I walked down to the shoreline through Villa Labiena’s gardens (Montebello guests can also go down to the shore via a separate walkway). The interiors of Villa Labiena are stunning, with intricate mosaic tiled floors and flowing 1920s curves everywhere.

Casa del Pescatore – this lake side property can only be approached on foot, walking down cobbled alleyways in the village. When you first arrive somebody comes to help you with your luggage. Once you’re there, it is out of the world. Every window, every terrace look toward the lake that casts glittering light into every room. Below you, lined up on tiny stilted stools in the lake’s edge, are the fishermen from whom the house takes its name, perched above the water. I found this really magical.

I also saw Prisma, Villa Marea, all the house on the Varenna estate, Riva del Lago, Serra, Pianello, Casa del Marinaio, as well as some absolutely stunning new properties, of which more later!
